Snowflake

This annual event has been extremely popular with our students. It is kind of a motivational event for junior high kids. Kids meet after school all together and in small groups. A trained speaker targets specific problems they all have at this age. In the past the speaker has shown film clips of other kids in different situations and then stops the film to discuss how to solve the problem with the kids input. It is a really cool program. Then the kids to break off into small groups, with high school leaders, giving them a chance to meet others and work together. They dance, have contests with teachers as judges, and have dinner together. By the end of the night, the kids have some great ideas in their heads about being kind to other people who they might have thought as different, about saying no to drugs, etc.

Snowflake 2009

Walter R. Sundling will be hosting an event called Snowflake in January. Operation Snowflake is an ongoing youth and adult cooperative process, focusing on prevention, and founded on the belief that every person has the capacity to make sound decisions regarding life and behavior, based on accurate information and an understanding of self, attitudes and motivations. This process is designed to promote personal and interpersonal growth, leadership skills and health decision-making, regarding a broad range of life concerns.

The event will be held on Friday, January 23 in the WRS gymnasium from 2:30pm-7:00pm. There will be trained student leaders from Fremd High School who will be teamed up with WRS teachers to run the event. WRS students will be placed in small groups where they will participate in games, discussions, and ice breaker activities related to the topics our speaker has touched upon. The small groups will meet after each presentation given by our speaker, Eddie Slowikowski. A few of the themes he will touch upon will be peer pressure, drugs and alcohol. For more information on his presentations, please visit Eddiespeak.com. During the evening, students will be given a theme for their group and items that go along with it. They will also have time to give out warm fuzzies, eat pizza, dance, and spend time with their friends.

Snowflake is a great event, and we encourage you to sign up. Please call Ms. Meghan Richards at (847) 963-3726 with questions. The cost of the evening is $10, which includes the pizza dinner and a t-shirt to remember the evening

PTA helps to make this great event go smoothly by making posters, breaking children off in groups, organizing parent volunteers for that night, and get food items donated (about 50 people). If you would like to assist contact the PTA Snowflake committee chair.
