Sports and Extracurricular
Activities 2010-2011
Sundling offers many opportunities for students to get involved
in extracurricular activities throughout the year. For any sport
or activity that meets more than once a week, students must meet
the following requirements for participation.
Student-Centered Opportunity to Reach Excellence (S.C.O.R.E.) |
- A student must be present for at least a half day of school
in order to participate in his/her sport or activity during
or after the school day.
- Students must be passing a minimum of six out of eight
classes in order to be eligible to participate in any sports
or activities that meet more than once a week. A passing
grade is considered as a D or higher.
- Students’ academic status will be monitored by their
coaches.
- Students that do not maintain academic and behavioral standards
may be temporarily suspended and/or permanently removed from
the activity. Individual coaches have the discretion to make
all final decisions based upon academic and behavioral standards.
|
District 15 provides an after school activity
bus, Monday through
Friday, for a fee of $60 per family.
Sundling has staff meetings, usually the first Monday of the month. There will be no after school activities on these days. Check the Calendar for more details.
Vehicle Drop-off and Pick-up of Students
Parents are asked to use the circle drive by the south entrance
to the building to drop off and pick up students. The north end
of the building by the parking lot is reserved for bus loading
and unloading, bike riders, and parking for staff and visitors.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Cheerleading
The purpose of cheerleading is to promote school spirit at basketball games.
Cheerleaders are chosen based on behavior, skill and enthusiasm. The squad
is chosen from student tryouts. They participate in practices and games scheduled
for after school through the end of January. The student may incur some expenses
associated with this activity.
Chorus
Chorus is comprised of both seventh and eighth grade students.
Participation is open to all students who have an interest in
singing. Rehearsals are three mornings a week at 7:00am.
Clubs
Many clubs are offered at Sundling at various times during the
school year. Clubs usually meet on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
or Thursday after school. The activity
bus is available for students who participate in clubs who have paid a $60 activity
bus fee. All students are encouraged to become involved. Examples of clubs offered
in the past include: Art Club, Service Club, Yearbook Club, Rocket Club, Latin
Dance Club, and Math Club.

is open to any string player in junior high. Rehearsals are held according to
a schedule determined at the beginning of each year. Orchestra performs at two
major all district concerts, one in December and one in May. The group enters
the Illinois Grade School Music Association Organization Contest. It also tours
several elementary schools in the district and performs a winter or spring music
concert for the younger students.
Peer Mentors
The Peer Mentor Program is the pre-eminent student leadership organization at WRS. It is comprised of 8th grade students who best exemplify the traits of enthusiasm, ambassadorship, respect, friendliness, and a commitment to assisting others.
Student Council
Student Council is a service organization whose purpose is to plan
and implement events, which provide a social and philanthropic
outlet for the student body.
Student Council is responsible for school dances and spirit days. Beyond this,
Student Council promotes student involvement in helping others, sponsors a local
food drive benefiting the Palatine Food Pantry, and helps raise funds in the
annual Pennies for Patients drive benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Student Council consists of one room representative and one alternate from each
section who are committed to helping carry out student activities. Students are
elected by their classmates and must maintain a C average, have no in school
or out of school suspensions, and have no “4” in conduct on their
report card. Each student must also volunteer for a committee that will help
carry out these projects. Each committee chooses a leader who will be responsible
for organizing the students on that committee.
Yearbook
Students are encouraged to join the PALADIN staff to work on
artwork, layouts, copy writing, cover design, and photography.
Any student may participate. Meetings
usually begin in September and continue through the end of February with meetings
held after school. Yearbooks are distributed the last week of school. Yearbooks
will only be ordered for students who have paid in advance.
CLUBS
We at Sundling value student participation in after school activities
and would appreciate your support in encouraging your students
to become involved. This type of participation will enhance your
student's junior high school experience and will make it more rewarding
and memorable.
During the year additional activities and clubs may be added and
we will share this information with you. Students should listen
to the morning/afternoon announcements for details
on clubs
such
as
if
a club meeting is
cancelled. Students
can take the activity bus home after club meetings.
Check back for updated information about clubs for the 2010-2011 school year.

Intramural as well as interscholastic sports
are offered at Sundling before and after school. All students are
invited and encouraged
to participate. A variety
of activities are planned throughout the year with emphasis on creating class
spirit. Any student may participate in this program with the completion
of an intramural card. The intramural card is a release form signed
by a guardian and is good for all sports for the entire year. Students
may pick and choose any activity and attend as often as they like.
Intramurals are an opportunity to try a new activity, improve on
skills, socialize, meet new friends and have fun.
Activities are flag football, tennis, golf, basketball, soccer,
badminton, floor hockey, volleyball, wrestling, softball, and
weight training. Intramurals are offered either before or after
school.
The schedule is subject to change depending on the weather and/or
the number of participants. All activities are posted on a calendar
in the gym for each month. Check out our Intramural webpage.
An activity
bus is available Monday through Friday at 4:00pm.
COMPETITIVE SPORTS
Interscholastic competition offered by Sundling includes sports teams for girls’ basketball,
boys’ basketball, and girls’ volleyball
are selected based upon tryouts. Cross-country, wrestling, and track and field
are no-cut sports and are open to all students. These teams compete against
the other three junior high schools in District 15 as well as junior high schools
from nearby school districts. All students on an interscholastic team must
have
a current physical examination on file in the nurse's office in order to participate.
There is a $85 participation fee per sport with a maximum of $175 fee per student
per year. Practices and games are scheduled after school.
Fall Sports

seventh grade girls, seventh grade boys, eighth grade girls,

as the finale.
Girls Basketball - There are girls' basketball teams
for both seventh and eighth grade. Tryouts are held in early
September. Twelve to fifteen girls

for each team. The season begins in late September and runs until mid-November.
Both teams participate in the district tournament in November. 2009 Schedule
Winter Sports
Boys Basketball - There are boys' basketball teams
for both seventh and eighth grades. Twelve to fifteen boys are
chosen for each
team based on
tryouts.
The season runs from November through January. A District 15 Tournament
is held
at the end of the season.
Wrestling - There is one team for both seventh
and eighth graders, which is open to all students. Wrestling
season begins in January and
concludes
in March
with
a District 15 tournament.

After School Activity Bus
Students who are participating in extacurricular activities, such
as interscholastic sports, intramurals, clubs, receive academic
assistance, use the RTC, or detentions will
be permitted to use this service. Students who are not involved
in activities or after school detentions will not be permitted
to ride the activity bus.
The activity bus fee is $60 per
family. The fee
for the activity bus can be paid in the school office or through
the district's online
payment system.
Students involved in an after school activity will be issued a
bus pass for the activity bus by the club or activity sponsor.
A new pass must be used each time the student rides the bus. This
pass will be distributed by the club sponsor daily at the end of
the activity. There are no permanent bus passes issued.
The four activity buses load students at 4:00pm and depart at
approximately 4:15pm, Monday through Friday, according to a route
schedule determined early in September. The routing will take
between 30 and 40
minutes depending on weather conditions and the number of students
riding
the bus. Please be aware that student activity bus stops
may require students to walk further than their regular bus stop. Since
not all students ride the activity bus every day it is not possible
to include all regular student bus stops on the afternoon route.
Students should let the driver know their stop when they board the bus. Stops are chosen based upon centralized locations identified by
the district transportation department. Please refer to the route
schedule for stop information.
The after school bus program runs Monday through Friday. The activity
bus is not available the day before Thanksgiving, Winter Break,
Spring Break, and for scheduled faculty meetings (usually on a Monday).
In addition, if after school activities are canceled due to inclement
weather, the activity bus may not be available. Students are informed
by intercom announcement of after school activity and activity
bus cancellations.
Note: some athletic events may
extend beyond the departure time for the activity bus.
